2009 Season Recap

This past season, the team raced in all three SAE North America events, traveling to Opelika, Alabama in April; Portland, Oregon in May; and Burlington, Wisconsin in June. Despite relatively low overall finishes (65/88 in Alabama, 43/65 in Oregon, and 65/100 in Wisconsin), the team deems the season a success with inopportune, unexpected difficulties hurting their performance at competitions. Standout performances of the season include: two top-15 design presentations and a forth place finish in the Alabama pulling event.

The 2009 season saw the return of last year's four-wheel drive vehicle, "Willy" and the introduction of "Orion." Willy made the journey to the competitions in Alabama and Oregon while Orion made its debut at the international competition in Wisconsin. Following a successful dynamic day in Alabama, Willy ran into some bad luck when the chain tensioner failed, taking it out of the endurance race after only a few laps. For the Oregon competition, Central Michigan's vehicle and equipment were carried along with our own so they could compete.  This exemplification of cooperation between the two teams helped us earn an award for outstanding sportsmanship.  A similar situation to Alabama occurred in Oregon when the 4x4 experienced electrical problems, forcing it to withdraw from endurance early. In Wisconsin, after some difficulties with the transmission during the dynamic day, the team got Orion in working order for the endurance race and was able to rally for a middle-of-the-pack finish.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors who helped us in so many ways over the past year. Without your help, we wouldn't be able to participate in all the adventures that make up Baja, providing every member of the team with experiences that highlight their college careers and allow them to enter the workplace with confidence to drive the industry forward.
